It's not often we're able to bring a guest on air with us for Kill Eat Exploit the Weak, so it was a pleasure to welcome fellow Hellbound scribe (and good friend) Jonathan Smith back to CFMU. Last week on Kill Eat Exploit the Weak:
We started the show with some new releases (Canadian and otherwise), threw in a couple of bands with Record Store Day releases, plus a few bands hitting the area in live form (Cauchemar, The Visit, Behemoth). For global metal^, we traveled to South Korea. And for simulated meat* we responded to Adrien Begrand's definition of metal in terms of "power" by exploring some expressions of power that deviate from the aggressive, masculine form.

The Monsters of Schlock will be tearing up the stage at Bay City Music Hall on March 22 along with special guests Wax Mannequinn and Deathpoint - the musical guests are a couple of entertaining hometown acts. I've never been to Bay City Music Hall, but I see a few upcoming shows in their event listings. Seems worth checking out.

KEEW playlist March 5, 2014 - CFMU pledge drive week, Raise Your Voice 2014!

If you read my last post you'll know that it's the time of year when we campus/community radio folks try to remind people about the unique and awesome work we do, and why non-profit radio stations like CFMU deserve your support.

In honour of the occasion, pledge drive week at 93.3FM CFMU, Adam and I hosted our show live this week. We tried to offer a good cross-section of what Kill Eat Exploit the Weak is all about - new metal, metal from the far reaches of the globe^, music on the fringes of metal*, local metal% and some metal favourites and classics, plus a dose of commentary from us.

KEEW playlists: January 29 and February 5, 2014 - new "global metal" feature

A few extra features to mention with these two recent Kill Eat Exploit the Weak playlists...

On January 29, we dedicated our simulated meat* segment to Toronto DIY label D-TRASH Records. D-TRASH's focus is heavy electronica (digital hardcore) but J Schizoid, who runs it, has some serious black metal cred (if you remember Dead of Winter, you know what I'm talking about). For a little contrast we threw in a Maple Metal Records set as well, checking out some of the Canadian albums they put out in 2013.

The following week, simulated meat* had a country vibe (alt country anyway) and, except for Divine Circles (which features Meghan Mulhearn from USX), only tangential metal connections. We also played a little Noam Chomsky-metal, but the big(gish) news for February 5 was the introduction of our new feature - spotlighting a metal artist from outside the regions most commonly associated with metal (like the UK, US, Scandinavia...). Our first global metal^ contenders happen to be from Mongolia, and we found them described as music fit for a modern Genghis Khan.
