remembering the "Energizer" Adrian Bromley

Over at Hellbound Sean Palmerston has posted a wonderful tribute to Adrian Bromley, who died a year ago today.

I had an eerie moment reading the intro - somehow we both met Adrian in 1995 while backstage at Molson Amphitheatre for a Fear Factory interview, yet it was some time yet before Sean and I met each other, and many more years before we both ended up writing for the same publications, eventually culminating with Adrian's unparalleled Unrestrained!. The man definitely had a way of bringing people together.

Tonight I raise a glass (or a few) to Adrian, memories, and metal.

memorializing... (a few reflections)

As planned, I attended the Adrian Bromley memorial concert on Saturday night. What surprised me though was the fact that things weren't as sad as I'd expected. Don't get me wrong - it was a struggle to hold back the tears now and then, but Adrian's energy and enthusiasm seemed to infuse the entire crowd. It was definitely more celebration of his spirit and accomplishments than melancholy, and brought together so many people Adrian had linked up in the first place.

The event drew a really impressive turnout, including many people up from the U.S., and produced an incredible atmosphere of camaraderie and commiseration. The bands, except for Woods of Ypres at the end, played short sets to leave time for people to connect and for a few (Adrian's brother, fiancee, friends and colleagues) to get up on stage, share some reflections on his life - and, in the case of his twin, to lead us in a silent moment of raised metal horns.

It was a fairly diverse but mostly metal line-up, ranging from an impressive Black Sabbath cover band, to extreme metal, comedy, and an acoustic set by Musk Ox (a band Adrian had been fervently promoting before his death). A photo and video presentation set to Green Carnation's Light of Day, Day of Darkness gave us all a brief look back on Adrian's numerous antics and remarkable capacity to act as social glue. (I was proud to be included in several shots.) Some of us managed to snag a commemorative t-shirt or back issues of Unrestrained! (I completed my own set). And I gather the silent auction and fundraising at the door were pretty successful but it was also successful in an emotional sense, a fitting tribute to someone who meant so much to so many.

It was a tricky event for me to review, and I'm not convinced I should have, but I wanted to see something about it in Exclaim!... You can read my 'official' review here if you're interested.

humane societies in need and memorializing a metal legend

I've seen, heard and read several news stories about humane societies suffering in the current economic crunch. Animal aid groups having inadequate funding to care for all nearby animals in need - well, that's pretty much a perpetual problem. But the gist of these recent tales is that people who lose their jobs, their nest eggs, their security can't afford to care for their pets. And pets can be expensive, especially once you factor vet care into the mix.

I went to a talk recently which raised the issue of the way animal protection, welfare and care issues often get set off against caring for the well-being of humans, as if it were an either/or proposition. I'm hoping that hard economic times don't worsen this false dichotomy...

A couple of posts ago I discussed the death of my friend and metal legend Adrian Bromley. This coming Saturday, January 17th, his family, friends, colleagues and fellow metalheads will be celebrating his life and legacy (and sharing in some collective mourning) at the Opera House in Toronto. Entrance, starting at 6:30pm, is by pay-what-you-can donation. A photographic slide show, videos, and mic for memorializing are part of the evening's line-up. metal scene loses one of its finest...

... and I lose a great friend.

Adrian Bromley - metal journalist, editor, publicist, and generally pretty incredible guy - passed away in his sleep yesterday. Most recently Adrian has been known as the co-editor of Unrestrained magazine and owner/publicist of Ixmati Media but for the past fifteen years and more he's been known as one of the metal scene's strongest supporters and most vibrant members.

Memorial notices for Adrian have been posted at Bravewords.com and Eye as well as numerous other sites - a clear indication of how much an impact he has had on the (metal) world.

My first knowledge of Adrian was during his days as a writer for M.E.A.T. magazine (Metal Events Around Toronto, I think it stood for). I remember reading his work for some time and then finally seeing him as well - when a friend pointed him out (in his Monster Voodoo Machine shirt) at a Slayer show. I met the man about a year later, around the time he and Gino Filicetti were launching Chronicles of Chaos. They interviewed Burton C. Bell, I interviewed Dino Cazares, but before that the three of us chatted for some time, waiting for Fear Factory to ditch Much Music for us.

Before long Adrian and I were corresponding and talking on the phone and have stayed in touched ever since. Back in the early days of our friendship Adrian supported my band with reviews, an interview, cd sales. I wrote a little for him then and much for him later. We hung out at shows and the odd party and bought each other drinks. We took a road trip to Montreal (along with a few others) for Voivod's last CD release party. He played host and tour guide for me and a good friend in New York City. He worked as liasion between me and the bands I interviewed (and occasionally befriended). He introduced me to the delightful feline, Yosemite. And he's left an indelible impact on my life.

Adrian Bromley will be missed - by his family, his friends, his colleagues, his cat, and by me.

Intertia Entertainment will host an event in honour of Adrian at the Opera House in Toronto on January 17, 2009.

UPDATE: The Bromley family is accepting donations in memory of Adrian - all donations will go toward funeral arrangements and any remaining funds will be given to charity in Adrian's honour.
