nevermind these twenty-teens! (aka: what I was digging in 2003)

When Kill Eat Exploit the Weak used to air on CKMS in Waterloo, my new year's tradition was to look back to the previous decade and highlight some of the best albums from ten years in the past instead of recapping the best of the year just ending.

I've been pretty diligent at maintaining the habit here on the blog, and though we're back on the radio this year, on CFMU 93.3FM, I've decided to constrain my excessive nostalgia to the online list. Tonight, on air, we review our favourite records of 2013 - tune in at midnight ET! But here, below, are some of the albums I did and do like best from 2003 (in no particular order but some particular favs are in bold).

  • Enslaved - Below the Lights
  • Septic Flesh - Sumerian Demons
  • Katatonia - Viva Emptiness
  • Opeth - Damnation
  • Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon
  • Type O Negative - Life Is Killing Me
  • Deadsoul Tribe - A Murder of Crows
  • Green Carnation - A Blessing in Disguise
  • Strapping Young Lad - Strapping Young Lad
  • Voivod - Voivod
  • The Gathering - Souvenirs
  • Arch Enemy - Anthems of Rebellion
  • Nevermore - Enemies of RealityMasterplan - Masterplan
  • Poisonblack - Escapextacy
  • Bathory - Nordland II
  • Soilwork - Figure Number Five
  • Cradle of Filth - Damnation and a Day
  • Edge of Sanity - Crimson II
  • The Devin Townsend Band - Accelerated Evolution
  • Unexpect - _We, Invaders
  • The Old Dead Tree - The Nameless Disease
  • Amon Amarth - Versus the World
  • Anathema - A Natural DisasterForest Stream - Tears of Mortal Solitude
  • Solefald - In Harmonia Universali
  • Moonspell - The Antidote
  • Nothingface - Skeletons
  • Ulver - A Quick Fix of Melancholy
  • Porcupine Tree - XM

2003 was also the year I travelled to Germany for Summer Breeze metal fest, and took a side trip to Örebro, Sweden, to meet Dan Swanö, so it was a pretty sweet metal year for me.
